Adam Descends; Chanoch Returns

Two directions of one story

TorahSynthesis

Adam HaRishon begins in Gan Eden.

He is formed into extraordinary primordial intimacy with the Divine will.

Then the cheit introduces concealment into the human condition.

The movement is downward.

חֲנוֹךְChanochEnoch, seventh generation from Adam. The Torah records that he walked with Elokim and was taken, without the refrain “and he died” that closes every other life in Bereishis 5. The name shares a root with chinuch, formation.Glossary is born generations later.

He does not begin inside the unbroken garden.

He begins after loss.

His movement is therefore different.

Adam receives radiance and descends into opacity.

Chanoch begins within opacity and walks toward radiance.

One might say that Adam and Chanoch trace two halves of an unfinished circle.

Adam reveals what is given from above.

Chanoch reveals what can return from below.

But the circuit is not yet closed.

For that we need Sinai.
